European Romantic Destinations at Christmas
Europe is a great start to find romantic destinations at Christmas. Here you will discover all the seasons across the continent, whether it’s a romantic firelit dinner, or exploring one of the many Christmas Market events. Alternatively, you may love to venture out and take in the snow covered landscape, or just viewing it from behind a gallery window…
However, there is another side of Europe with some exceptional romantic destinations at Christmas, down south nearer to the Mediterranean. Whilst still in Winter, there are festivals, beaches to visit and restaurants with amazing views whilst gazing out to the ocean. These are definitely some of the best destinations in Europe for Christmas.
München-Bavaria, Germany
Recommended by Jeanine De Diana at Lets go a Wandering
München (Munich) is one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas you will find, with one of the oldest Christmas Markets at Marienplatz (main square). Which has roots dating back to the 14th century, set against the stunning architecture that is all lit up for the occasion. Stroll through the stalls all replicating the old world Bavarian charisma. Where you can feast your eyes and tantalise your taste buds with fine Bavarian delicacies and old crafts.
Whilst there are several Christmas markets around the city another grand display can be found in Kaiserhof of the Residenz (city palace). Filled with artisans that will gladly show off their skills and wares. Though my ultimate favourite was the Mittelalterlicher Weihnachtsmarkt (Medieval Christmas Market) of München. Medieval Christmas Markets of, possibly not so romantic unless of course your loved one likes these. Then these alone are amongst the most romantic destinations at Christmas.
Our time in München, was also to fulfill a travel experience, which was part of my Christmas gift to my husband. A high-voltage installation display at the Deutsches Museum having an electrical background, this was a very romantic gesture on my part (he tells me ha ha). Sadly, the area it was housed in is closed for renovations, though when it opens again in 2028, we will re-visit.
Additionally, München is a fantastic base point if you wish to travel along all or some of ‘Romantische Straße (The Romantic Road)’. The road is approximately 460 km (290 mi) between Würzburg and Füssen. Whilst not possible for a single day trip, the road trip theme through Bavaria takes in several of the most romantic destinations at Christmas. Whether it’s the full road trip you wish to do or a few day trips from München, you won’t be disappointed.
Berlin, Germany
Recommended by Matthias & Kent of Destination The World
Berlin, the capital city of Germany, is a great place to visit all year round. But during the Christmas season it’s especially beautiful. Christmas season usually starts with 1st of Advent, which is mostly at the end of November or beginning of December. It is one of the great romantic destinations at Christmas.
The highlights in Berlin are definitely the Christmas markets. During the festive season there are over 80 Christmas markets all over Berlin. The Christmas markets in Kulturbrauerei, Gendarmenmarkt and Schloss Charlottenburg are our favourites.
We usually visit one of these Christmas markets in the evening. All the lights, the smell of roasted almonds and festive decorations make you feel cozy. And what is one of the more romantic destinations at Christmas than visiting a market, in front of a baroque castle, enjoy some glasses of mulled wine together and listen to Christmas carols?
To visit one, or several, Christmas markets you should visit Berlin before the actual Christmas holidays. During the holidays, lots of shops, restaurants, bars or cafes are closed and the city feels very calm and quiet.
We recommend 3-4 days to fully enjoy Berlin during the Christmas season.
We love Glühwein (mulled wine) and you definitely should try it. You can get it in different variations: red, white, and sometimes you even add a shot of rum or amaretto.
Typical food at a Christmas market is Bratwurst (fried sausage) in a bread roll, roasted almonds, and gingerbread.
Some restaurants offer special Christmas menus and serve duck or goose, which are very typical German Christmas dishes.
Besides all the romantic Christmas markets, there is Christmas decoration all over the city. There’s a large Christmas tree put up in front of Brandenburg Gate and the famous Kurfürstendamm shopping streets is full of lights and a great option for Christmas shopping.
Berlin is great to visit for all its sights, but it is one of the more romantic destinations at Christmas season, come and enjoy a tradition German holiday.
Prague, Czechia
Recommended by Veronika Primm of Travel Geekery
I cannot think of a more romantic city than Prague and even more so at Christmas. Prague has the most picturesque Old Town and you’re also guaranteed to be amazed once you walk through it and make your way via the Charles Bridge to the majestic castle.
Winter in Prague revolves around Christmas. Already at the end of November, Prague gets all dressed in warm decorative lights. The way they reflect in the Vltava River is just magical. Imagine walking along with your loved one at dusk, hand-in-hand, with freshly fallen snow cracking under your feet…Is this not one of the most divine romantic destinations at Christmas.
If you’re lucky and the snow shows up, Prague’s snow-sprinkled rooftops look straight out of a fairytale. You can find one of the best views in front of Prague Castle, in the corner of the Hradčanské náměstí Square.
Apart from the Old Town, I especially like the so-called New World area. The little houses attached to each other with a cobblestoned road winding through provide the most romantic setting. You can even stay in this romantic corner of Prague – at the U Raka hotel.
Prague’s Christmas markets are charming beyond words and getting a mug of mulled wine or hot mead with your sweetheart will warm your heart as well as your belly. I find Prague Castle Christmas market to have the most romantic atmosphere of all the markets in town. A must for when looking for romantic destinations at Christmas.
You should plan for at least three days in Prague at Christmas. If you want to take it easy, add a day or two more.
Vienna, Austria
Recommended by Sabrina Msdm at Shades of Summr
During the most wonderful time of the year, the beautiful city of Vienna lights up and transforms into one big Christmas market. Fairy lights decorate the imperial-times buildings that Vienna is so famous for and the smell of hot mulled wine is in the air. This makes it one of the truly romantic destinations at Christmas to get in the mood.
Starting in mid-November, many Squares in Vienna will fill with cute little chalets, where hot mulled wine, Christmas bakery items, and traditional handcrafted goods are sold. The most impressive Christmas market in Vienna is in front of the town hall (Rathausplatz), where a gigantic ice skating rink will be constructed each year. Now, what could be more romantic, than gliding hand in hand over the ice in front of a beautifully lit up historical building, with soft Christmas music and a cup of hot mulled wine afterward?
For me strolling through the beautifully decorated streets, passing by historically impressive castles and monuments, such as the baroque Belvedere castle, is truly special and a romantic experience that I loved to share with my husband. Just another reason that Vienna is one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas.
Especially for my husband, who did not grow up in Austria like me, the special atmosphere in the historic old city center was enchanting and made the trip truly magical. During Christmas times, special Advent concerts, featuring famous Austrian artists can be visited all over the city. I have enjoyed a performance of the work of Strauss and Mozart in the atmospheric baroque Peterskirche with my love.
In my opinion, you should at least spend four days in Vienna in order to visit most of the stunning Christmas markets and get some Christmas shopping done on the famous Mariahilferstrasse.
Hallstatt, Austria
Recommended by Martina Hzb of PlacesofJuma
The picturesque village of Hallstatt is definitely one of my favorite travel highlights, and what’s more, it’s a great choice as one of the unforgettable romantic destinations at Christmas! I have been to Hallstatt many times, but mostly in summer, and then it is mega busy there. Much nicer was my visit to Hallstatt in winter in Christmastime! At this time, you discover this jewel from its quiet side. Simply unique for me was the black Hallstatt lake, which together with the majestic snow-capped mountains in the background and the village of Hallstatt conjures up a backdrop like something out of a picture book.
We were lucky and were able to experience Hallstatt with snow. Walking through the village, I quickly realized why this place is the most photographed in Austria. Although the town is relatively small, Hallstatt still has many attractions to offer. I found the historic marketplace with the beautiful Trinity Column and the many colorful houses decorated for Christmas particularly beautiful. The romantic Christmas market in the center was also beautiful. For the perfect winter photos, we walked to the Hallstatt Viewpoint, where you can enjoy the most beautiful view of the snowy Hallstatt.
Especially at Christmas, the atmosphere in the town is magical. It smells of mulled wine and gingerbread, the houses are discreetly decorated and the flair is absolutely romantic. I would recommend Hallstatt to everyone as one of the exquisite romantic destinations at Christmas!
Tyrol State, Austria
Recommended by Paul D’Souza of Paulmarina
Tyrol is a region in Austria known for its alpine views and unique customs. Some of the best ski resorts in Europe are located in Tyrol, making it a top place to be in December for winter sports loving couples. I recommend a stay in a chalet in the mountains in Kitzbühel, Ischgl, Alpbach, Zillertal or Arlberg for a memorable romantic trip a deux.
When the first snow falls in the cities and villages in December, the energy changes and the colorful buildings and streets appear like a place in a magical fairy tale book. These are truly some of the most romantic destinations at Christmas. I recommend taking a stroll through the old town of Innsbruck, to travel up to the Nordkette mountain range by cable car and to take in the beautiful view.
Plan a dinner in the Bergisel ski jumping ramp restaurant, known for its exclusive food menu. My wife loves hanging out in the medieval towns in Tyrol, such as Hall in Tyrol, Rattenberg, Kufstein and Kitzbühel. Getting to know the locals and their customs should be on every one’s list too.
Enjoy a day at a Thermal spa and sauna village with your loved one and try some special food specialties such as the Kaspressknödel (cheese pressed dumplings) and Speckknödel (bacon bread dumplings). Other food and drink specialties, such as the Germkiachl (Sauerkraut or Lingonberry filled fried yeast buns), can be found on traditional Christmas markets, held in most towns in December.
Rattenberg one of Tyrol’s top romantic destinations at Christmas, having a unique romantic candlelight Christmas market held every year in its old medieval cobblestone streets. I think this will give you a taste to plan a trip and discover all the things to do in Tyrol, Austria.
Alsace Région, France
Recommended by Bec Wyld from Visit the Alsace
The Alsace Region of France is one of the top romantic destinations at Christmas, if not on the planet. It is a world-famous fairy-tale destination in Europe with people from all over the world having it as the top destination on their bucket list to see. It’s hard to believe it gets any better, but it does, and it gets so much better at Christmas.
You can quickly fly or train into Strasbourg one of the bigger towns in the Alsace or you can easily get to Colmar as well. Both have some of the most amazing food for you to sample when you are there as well as some amazing wines. Wine caves are the best place for you to find the perfect wine for your stay in the Alsace. Once you find your favourite you can easily request it at any of the restaurants you visit. Many will have their own favourite so you never know what you will end up having.
The Christmas markets in both Strasbourg and Colmar are some of the biggest in Europe. They are very busy and can be stretched out right over the city centre but still very walkable. From square to square you’ll find each had roughly the same souvenirs but some of the food and mulled wine recipes will differ. A favourite with us is the white Vin Chaud, although it is hard to pass up the traditional red one too. Some stalls will have you leave a deposit, so you return the cup and others serve in a takeaway. Wandering the markets and staying warm is easy when there is a good Vin Chaud around the corner.
If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the larger cities with your loved one. Hiring a car and driving is the best way to see more of the lesser visited romantic destinations at Christmas in the Alsace.
The smaller towns will still have a Christmas market, but you may find that it has much more of a local vibe than the larger towns. The food is a little more delicious as it is not made in massive amounts and the Vin Chaud recipe is decades old and made with love.
If you really want to escape the markets completely towns like Neuf Braisch and Ribeauville still have markets, but you can wander other areas as well.
Most of the sites like Chateau Haut Konisgsbourg and Chateau Hohlandsbourg will be open with hopefully a sprinkling of snow for your visit. Unfortunately, most vineyards will be closed but you can still find their wines at the cellar door or in a wine cave in a town nearby. It doesn’t matter if you visit the Alsace during the Christmas market time or in the times where they are preparing you will find it a beautiful area. In addition to being one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas, that will be sure to bring out the romantic side of anyone.
Bordeaux, France
Recommended by Victoria Maria of Guide Your Travel
Bordeaux is an incredibly underrated Christmas destination and ideal for as on of the romantic destinations at Christmas. While a lot of tourists visit the area during the summer months, the weather can be very hot and uncomfortable and is a lot more bearable during the winter. Temperatures generally lie around 10 degrees Celsius during the day which feels cool and Christmassy but not too cold to be freezing. One of my favourite things to visit are the Christmas markets which take place from November to December.
The city is decorated beautifully with Christmas lights, and you can enjoy delicious baked goods as you wander the streets. This is one of the most famous wine cities in the world, so you definitely need to do a tasting during your time there this winter.
Leave the busy streets behind and take the train to Saint-Émilion small town outside of Bordeaux. This is where some of the best wine in the world comes from and you can choose between a variety of chateaux which usually offer tastings of their different wines. Make sure to try authentic macarons while you are in Saint-Émilion, which are very different from the colourful pastries you might be used to.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Recommended by Lowri From Many Other Roads
Europe is full of the most amazing and unique destinations. However, if you are searching for the most romantic destinations at Christmas, Amsterdam should be at the top of your list.
Amsterdam is a city that is worth visiting at any time of the year. However, it has a very special atmosphere during Christmas. The city centre is full of lights, decorations, and markets.
There is also so much to do here for the perfect Couples getaway. You can visit one of the many museums, wrap up in a blanket at a local cafe or go ice skating outside the famous Rijsmuseum.
One of the ultimate things to do in Amsterdam at Christmas is explore the Canals. Walking along them is a great way to spend an afternoon but one of the best ways to explore them is by booking a canal cruise. There is something so special about seeing the City lights from the water and is something you will not forget in a hurry!
The weather in Amsterdam during this time of year is pretty cold, so make sure to pack your winter clothes for this trip. Parts of Europe during Christmas are bitterly cold so if you are not prepared, it can honestly ruin your day.
The Dutch capital has more than enough things to do for any visitor – whether you are looking for romantic things to do or just want to explore the city’s great spots for couples. For the best trip to this European gem, book during the Christmas Season.
Palermo, Sicily, Italy
Recommended by Caroline Muller of Veggie Wayfarer
Christmas usually evokes the image of snow-covered mountains, piping hot wine and wooden chalets filled with sweetly scented foods. Yet, for those who suffer the cold it can equally mean permanently frozen hands & feet and a hundred layers of clothing in a desperate attempt to ward off the winter chills.
Spending Christmas on the island of Sicily is the perfect solution for those looking to escape the cold. With an average temperature of 20 ºC (68 ºF) and a propensity for copious amounts of food during festivals (including Christmas) coupled with the opportunity for romantic strolls in age-old streets. Make Sicily one of the perfect romantic destinations at Christmas.
There are plenty of things to do in Palermo. The city comes alive with twinkling lights and abundant Christmas decorations on every single storefront, not to mention in and outside the many churches. As far as romantic destinations at Christmas go this is a must go to. Be sure to visit the baroque Church of Gesu and the Arab Norman San Cataldo church. Pop into the Norman Palace to see the UNESCO world heritage Palatine Chapel before heading to Palermo Cathedral to climb up on the roof and get the very best views over Palermo.
Take in some holiday cheer at one of the oldest markets in the city: Ballaro or la Vucciria. Incidentally, these are the best places for people watching & tasting some of the best local foods. Stroll around the Christmas markets on Via Magliocco Street (great if you are looking to purchase some artisanal gifts). The Pala Giotto Fair is a great place to go if you happen to be traveling with kids as it has plenty of rides to keep the little ones entertained.
Seville, Spain
Recommended by Astrid Vinje from The Wandering Daughter
Seville is one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas in Europe. The city’s beautiful architecture and rich history create a perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway. Spending a day in Seville is a perfect way to spend a Christmas vacation with your partner!
Although we visited Seville with our kids, we still enjoyed the festive atmosphere during the Christmas holidays. And the decoration truly made the city feel romantic!
Besides visiting some of Spain’s most iconic landmarks, such as Seville Cathedral and the Royal Alcazar, we also enjoyed spending an afternoon at Plaza Espana, a public square with a semi-circular canal around it. At Plaza Espana, couples can rent boats to row around the canals, is this one of the especially romantic destinations at Christmas. It’s a perfect way to spend a romantic afternoon. We also love walking around the Triana neighborhood, where you’ll find plenty of options for delicious Spanish tapas.
Of course, a visit to Seville would not be complete without experiencing a traditional flamenco performance. Teatro de Flamenco is one of the best places to see this amazing art form. And for a truly unique experience, we love spending an afternoon at a hammam, a traditional bath house. A legacy of the Islamic Moors who once ruled all throughout the Andalucía region of Spain, hammams offer a relaxing and rejuvenating experience for the weary traveler.
Whether you’re spending a day experiencing the sights, sounds, and flavours of Seville, or relaxing at a calming hammam. The city of Seville is surely one of the best romantic destinations at Christmas, providing you a romantic getaway with your partner.
Malaga, Spain
Recommended by Linn Haglund of Amused by Andalucia
One of the most romantic destinations at Christmas is the coastal city of Malaga in southern Spain. Malaga in winter is an absolute wonderland with pleasant temperatures up to 20 ºC (68 ºF) in the daytime on a sunny day, crawling down to 4-5 ºC (40-41 ºF) at night. The top highlight of Christmas is the Christmas light show in Calle Larios which takes place every evening in December.
For couples, Malaga is also a wonderful destination to enjoy romantic tapas and wine lunches that can drag into the late hours in the quaint cobblestoned streets lit up with festive Christmas lights. Make sure you try the Roscon de Reyes which is the traditional Christmas cake with cream and dried fruit. Inside, there is a plastic figure of the baby Jesus and the one that gets it will be King or Queen of the day – so maybe it is worth buying a whole cake to share and the one getting the figure will be treated to something romantic by its partner, like a day at the Hammam?
While most of Europe celebrates Christmas on the 24th or the 25th of December, the main day of Christmas celebration for the Spanish is the 6th of January, the day of Reyes (The Three Kings Day) when the kings brought gifts for the baby Jesus. From the evening on the 5th and throughout the 6th, you can witness processions with floats around the city where the Three Kings and other fairy tale figures through sweets for the children.
To get a good experience of the Christmas activities, including the Christmas markets, you should at least spend a week in Malaga. Other top activities you should not miss out on are seeing the sunset from the Moorish Gibralfaro fortress, walking the lush gardens in the Alcazaba, and go on a sunrise walk, hand in hand, on the beach. How could you go past Malaga as one of the most romantic destinations with all this and more.
Algarve, Portugal
Recommended by Alya from The Algarve Family
The Algarve province in southern Portugal is one of the perfect romantic destinations at Christmas. We love the Christmas-themed beach holiday in the Algarve where during the day you can relax on a beach and sit in front of a fireplace with a glass of local wine at night.
The region is famous for its spectacular beaches surrounded by limestone cliffs. Even in December, it’s warm and sunny in the Algarve. You can spend Christmas by the beach with your loved one. Camilo Beach, Marinha Beach, and Carvoeiro Beach are some of our favourite beaches in the Algarve. We love exploring the beautiful, rugged coastline by boat or kayak. A kayak tour around Ponta da Piedade in Lagos or Benagil Cave near Carvoeiro is a perfect way to spend a day. Watching dolphins is another not-to-miss water activity here. Just a few reasons the Algarve is one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas.
We enjoy outdoor activities like surfing and hiking and Algarve in winter is great for both. Good waves, surf shops, and schools can be found in Sagres, Lagos, and Praia da Arrifana. As for hiking trails, there are plenty of them throughout the region from easy strolls on boardwalks to challenging multi-day routes.
The streets of the towns in the Algarve are beautifully decorated for Christmas. There are Christmas markets, parades, and shows. Lagos is known for New Year’s Eve fireworks. Spending a week between Christmas and New Year in the Algarve is an amazing romantic holiday.
London, United Kingdom
Recommended by Paulina Borowik at UK Everyday
One of the most romantic destinations at Christmas with incredible decorations and lovely spots to visit is London. For a festive and idyllic moment, visit the Shard – the tallest skyscraper in London with one of the biggest Christmas trees in the city.
Enjoy Aurora drinks in one of the bars while admiring panoramic views of London. BAR 31 provides Alp vibes in a jaw-dropping location. However, if you want to enjoy a 360-degree view and try some British cuisine, head to TING located on the 35th floor in the Shard.
Breathtaking sunsets and seasonal decorations in this iconic building will offer you a unique and romantic experience. You can also witness a stunning light show on the top of the Shard tower or watch Aurora illumination inside the building.
The ideas for a romantic Christmas in London are endless. Whether you rent a Snow Globe by the River Thames or watch the Nutcracker in the Royal Opera House, London offers many incredible winter activities. Surely this alone makes it one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas.
One of the most magical experiences are Christmas lights in the most famous streets in London. Visit Regent Street for the most beautiful displays and admire New Bond Street shop windows while searching for a gift for your partner. For a romantic stay, head back to Shangri-La Shard – one of the most luxurious hotels in London.
Santorini, Greece
Recommended by Clotilde Passalacqua from A Princess Travelling with Twins
Greece, with its more than 200 inhabited islands offers an incredible number of romantic destinations at Christmas, but one that immediately jumps to mind is Santorini. I’m sure you have seen many pictures with that fire-red sunset falling into the water, the white houses and churches with blue domes, dinner on the beach or by the water. Yes, these pictures fooled me too…what you don’t see in the pictures is the crowd that goes with them, especially in summer months, I was definitely not prepared for it.
Of course, visiting Santorini at any time of the year is still an amazing trip. The sunset is still beautiful and the dinner romantic, but when you need to share it with thousands of people it spoils a little the mood.
Quite another story during the winter months, even if Christmas brings more tourists to Santorini, the island is much quieter, and prices are much lower. At this time of the year, the temperatures are too low to swim, but to be honest the beach and the sea is not what you are coming to Santorini for.
You will be able to walk in Oia without fighting with people or feeling like part of a flock of sheep, and you will be able to sit in one of the best spots to watch the sunset. If you choose carefully the best way to enjoy some relaxing time is to pick accommodation with a private heated pool on the side of the caldera, where you can relax after a day sightseeing around the island.
You will probably not have the same Christmassy feeling as in other European cities, but the atmosphere you get from the island in this season will still be magic! Making it one of the truly romantic destinations at Christmas.
USA Romantic Destinations at Christmas
Similar to Europe, many of the states are covered in glistening snow. With whole communities get involved in creating winter wonderlands of the community and their homes. Though not all states have snow at Christmas where there are romantic dinners shared over a cozy fire, or cuddled up on sled rides covered with a warm rug. In addition to some fantastic Christmas Markets, which make amazing romantic destinations at Christmas.
However, there are still a lot to be said of having some romantic destinations at Christmas that are warmng on the outside, and the USA have those also. It’s really the best of both worlds, enjoy all the benefits of a snowy destination where fires and cuddling under a warm rug is premium. Or enjoy, beaches, outdoor water activities and cool drinks on a balcony there is a destination for every taste.
Woodstock – Vermont
Recommended by Paula from Paula Pins the Planet
If you are looking for one of the best romantic destinations at Christmas in the USA, you should add Woodstock in Vermont to the top of your list. Woodstock has a reputation for a romantic escape, offering plenty of things to do, from history to adventure outdoor.
It is one of my favourite things to do in Vermont in winter, because it is one of the most beautiful towns to visit in the United States. Woodstock is a great place to visit all year long, but it turned into a magic place during Christmas time because of the holiday decorations. Here you can also find local artists, craftspeople, and purveyors that capture the Vermont winter wonderland spirit.
If you are looking for a fun way to spend your Christmas in Woodstock, downtown has plenty of fun options, whether you are into a draft beer, wine, fine dinner, or dancing all night long. Here you will find something for everyone, and all within walking distance.
Now if you love the holiday festive, Woodstock offers several options to choose from. One of the most popular and the festive that I recommend is the Wassail Weekend, a weekend event held at the Billings Farm, a wonderful dairy farm and museum. The event normally happens during the second week of December, when they recreate the historic New England Christmas charm.
I recommend you visit Woodstock for at least two days and one night. Here you will find great options for inns and boutique hotels, but if you are looking for a romantic gateway, I recommend renting a romantic cabin that offers you breath-taking views and a secluded gateway free of the busy everyday life for a relaxing stay. Just another reason Woodstock is one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas.
New York City, New York
Recommended by James from Travel Collecting
New York City is one of the incredibly romantic destinations at Christmas time. Dozens of Christmas rom coms and TV episodes have been set here for a reason. I recommend at least a week, especially of this is your first time to New York, since there is so much to see and do in the city, but a long weekend will give you time to experience the highlights.
I live in New York and the holiday season is my favourite time for romantic things to do. I love walking around and seeing all of the department stores’ holiday window and the Christmas trees that decorate most parks and institutions. My favourite place is Bryant Park, which not only has a large tree, but also has ice skating (incredibly romantic, surrounded by the New York Public Library and Midtown skyscrapers), as well as a holiday market and a large lodge to grab a hot chocolate with marshmallows! How could you not choose this as one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas??
For more romantic ice skating, Central Park and Rockefeller Centre are also worth checking out. For more shopping, there are also great markets at Union Square and inside Grand Central Terminal.
If lights are your thing, for a romantic night out, try one of the winter light festivals. There are several – all with enormous lanterns in the shapes of animals, buildings, etc. all glowing. My favourite is the one on Staten Island (the ferry ride at night, with views of Manhattan and the State of Liberty) is also incredibly romantic), but there are others to choose from. Or take in the free Sound and Light Show on the façade of Saks Fifth Avenue (the enormous Rockefeller Tree is right behind you). Grab some roasted chestnuts from a nearby street vendor and cuddle up with your loved one as you enjoy the spectacle.
Another romantic evening activity is to take in a show. Of course, there are always Broadway shows to enjoy, but over the holidays, you can also catch a performance of The Nutcracker by the New York City Ballet or see the Rockettes in the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
New York a one of the wonderfully romantic destinations at Christmas with no end of things to do over the holidays!
Asheville, North Carolina
Recommended by Victoria of Southern Trippers
Looking for one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas of all time? If so then book a trip to Asheville and spend Christmas in North Carolina.
After all, this cozy mountain town is brimming with over romantic holiday-inspired events that you and your partner will love.
So, start your visit off with a trip to the stunning and always popular Biltmore Estate from the 1800s.
Not only is the entire property bedazzled with incredible holiday decor, but you can enjoy a fun day time or evening tour of the former Vanderbilt estate.
Then, after admiring large swaths of garland and elaborate Christmas trees, be sure to head over to Antler Hill Village and Winery for a delicious sample of some incredible red and white Christmas wine.
Then, add to the romance by attending the annual Winter Lights event held at the North Carolina Arboretum before seeing some incredible gingerbread houses on display in the lobby of the Omni Grove Park Inn. It truly is one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas.
Every year this amazing accommodation features exquisite gingerbread houses that were designed for The National Gingerbread House Competition. In fact, there’s also a life-size gingerbread house that serves up incredible holiday-themed treats too.
Finally, spend the night inside one of the romantic rooms inside the Biltmore Village Inn. It’s a lovely, 4-star Victorian-inspired bed and breakfast where you can stay in one of seven individually decorated rooms with four-poster beds.
Plus, all guests get access to complimentary gourmet breakfast as well as, free wine and cheese in the afternoon.
30A, Florida
Recommended by Roshni Patel from The Wanderlust Within
One of the most romantic destinations at Christmas in the US is Rosemary Beach, Florida.
It is home to the Pearl Hotel, voted “The Most Romantic Hotel in Florida”. It is the only adult-only hotel in the area, and its luxury spa, complimentary bicycles and rooftop pool ensure it remains a favourite amongst couples.
Rosemary Beach is one of sixteen beach neighbourhoods within 30A (South Walton) but is particularly popular for romantic breaks and honeymoons. There are miles of powdery white sands and emerald green waters that can still be enjoyed at this time of year as the average temperature is in the mid-late 60s.
At Christmas, the main street in Rosemary Beach comes to life with Christmas lights decorating all the boutique shops, cafés, and restaurants. The main Christmas tree is also a popular spot, but you must make sure you go in search of the festive train too!
If couples are looking for a bit of culture and entertainment, head to the Seaside amphitheatre to watch the Repertory Theatre’s holiday show.
Staying for 2 – 3 nights is recommended so you can really soak in the atmosphere and get a taste for this ever so chic destination.

Chicago is one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas in the United States. I recommend staying at least 2 to 3 days to enjoy the best holiday activities and attractions, but there are enough romantic and festive things to do for a longer stay.
My favourite thing to do in Chicago during the holiday season is to visit Christkindlmarket, an outdoor Christmas market. Enjoy delicious food and hot beverages including Glühwein (mulled wine from Germany) while shopping or browsing for decorations, souvenirs, and other gifts.
Another must see attraction during the holidays is the giant Christmas tree in Millennium Park. While at Millennium Park, stop by for a photo in front of the famous Cloud Gate sculpture (also called The Bean). You can also go outdoor ice skating together at the rink in front of The Bean or at the ice skating ribbon at nearby Maggie Daley Park.
Couples can take a romantic stroll while enjoying the many holiday, light displays in the Chicago area including ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo and the illuminated trail at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Truly one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas.
Other festive things to do in Chicago include seeing a holiday themed show and having drinks at one of the many holiday themed pop up bars that are open during the season. You can even ride (or catch a glimpse of) the specially decorated Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) holiday train and holiday bus while getting around the city.
Leavenworth, Washington State
Recommended by Jessica Schmit from Uprooted Traveler
Leavenworth, Washington looks like something straight out of a Hallmark movie- imagine a small, bustling town, with Bavarian-style architecture, tucked in the Cascade mountains. Christmas in Leavenworth, however, is next level, with plenty of small wine bars with roaring fireplaces and gluhwein, half a million Christmas lights twinkling in its downtown, and a good chance of having snowflakes drifting gently down. Making it one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas.
If you want to experience Leavenworth at its most festive, plan your trip between the weekend after Thanksgiving and Christmas itself. While you’re here, you’ll find carollers strolling the streets, chestnuts literally being roasted over open fires, and even appearances by Santa himself. The town is modelled after a Bavarian village in the Alps, so if you get peckish, you’ll find tons of tasty sausages (with plenty of sauerkraut), pretzels, and streusel to lean into the German vibes.
When you’re ready for a break from the holiday cheer, there’s plenty of ways to indulge in romance- for example, the Bavarian Lodge has not one, but two outdoor hot tubs to enjoy the views of the surrounding snow-capped Cascades. A fantastic experience at one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas. If you’d prefer to get up close and personal with Leavenworth’s winter wonderland, consider snowshoeing or Nordic skiing through the Cascades together, hand-in-mittened-hand. And, once you’re done, there will always be plenty of mulled wine waiting for you back in town to warm you up!
Honolulu, Hawaii
Recommended by Ossama Alnuwaiser from Awesome Traveler
Honolulu is one of the most beautiful romantic destinations at Christmas. What makes it a special destination is that the weather is warm all year long. Therefore, you can enjoy water activities at the beach even during winter. One of the things that Honolulu is famous for is surfing. You can buy best surfing gear at a local shop and venture into the sea.
Another activity that you can attend is snorkelling at Waikiki Beach. Trust me, it is a special experience that you get to see the flora and fauna of the marine habitats from a different perspective. You expect to see several fish and corals that you have probably never seen before.
Attend the annual charismas celebration The Nutcracker at Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall. It is a Ballet Hawaiian-themed dance that is designated to charismas. It is quite entertaining with beautiful scenery that you and your partner can enjoy. After attending the Nutcracker, you can get your energy out by participating in the Jingle Rock Run in Honolulu. There are also Christmas themed food and games that couples might adore and enjoy.
Not to forget the Holiday concert at the Hawaii Convention Centre. The Na Leo Pilimehana concert might be your cup of tea. Pay them a visit and enjoy their live performance. There is also open buffet dinner. A fantastic array of activities for everyone, in one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas.

Other Romantic Destinations at Christmas
Whilst many of Europe and USA destinations are covered in glistening snow and cold climates. That is not the case for those in or close to the Southern Hemisphere, where at Christmas time you’ll get a warmer climate. These make perfect romantic destinations at Christmas to enjoy the ocean breezes, relaxing at the beach or sipping drinks alfresco on the balcony of a romantically set restaurant.
However, make no mistake the Christmas spirit is alive and well in these tropical Christmas destinations. With festivals, markets and Christmas events. Though you may see more ‘sand angels’ than ‘snow angels’.
Cartagena, Colombia
Recommended by Adam McConnaughhay from Cartagena Explorer
Cartagena, Colombia is without a doubt one of the most romantic destinations at Christmas or anytime. A former gem of Spain’s colonies in the Americas, the city boasts a charming and colourful architecture. After living here for over a decade and meeting my wife here, I really can’t imagine a more romantic place.
In the historic centre, you can stroll along narrow streets with flowered covered balconies overhead. There are tons of great Cartagena restaurants and pretty, boutique hotels in this area. You can even stay in former colonial convents in the Charleston Santa Teresa or the Sofitel Santa Clara, two of Cartagena’s finest hotels.
I love taking in the sunset from the colonial era wall that surrounds the historic centre. Café del Mar, located atop the wall is a great spot for a few drinks. My wife and I also love the rooftop bar at Hotel Movich, which has the most amazing view of the bay and modern Bocagrande district behind it. Also, we always loved doing sunset cruises on the bay.
Now, Cartagena is not exactly a winter wonderland. On Colombia’s Caribbean coast, there is year round warm weather. However, it’s the perfect romantic destination at Christmas for beach bums! The best beaches in Cartagena are located outside the city in the Rosario Islands, about a 45 minute boat ride away. There are some great eco resorts and lodges out there that make for the perfect romantic escape from it all.
Finally, you of course can get out and party anytime in Cartagena, but around the Christmas holidays, the city is especially lively. Many restaurants and bars do special dinners and all-inclusive events for Christmas Eve and New Year’s, so be sure to look into those as you’ll need reservations. The city is also gorgeous lit up with lights on the walls and various light set ups in the different plazas.
Krabi, Thailand
Recommended by Martina Hzb of PlacesofJuma
Krabi in Thailand is one of my favourite travel destinations, my last vacation during Christmastime was one of my best experiences. Especially in the days around Christmas to New Year, you can spend a great and really romantic time here. A wonderful mix of Christmas atmosphere and tropical paradise, which may seem a bit cheesy, but still has its charm. It’s casual, colourful, glittery, and there’s loud Christmas music playing on every corner. A truly fantastic inclusion to the best romantic destinations at Christmas.
Along with the rugged limestone cliffs, the jungle, the snow-white sandy beaches, and the offshore islands, you get to experience a different kind of Christmas on vacation! I found the resort of Ao Nang especially cool, where everything was decorated for Christmas in the many bars and restaurants. The tourists are also in a good mood at this time, very sociable, and also often walk around with Christmas hats.
It’s also nice to have the contrast of snow. Here you escape the winter, and still celebrate Christmas. As a gift, we gave ourselves numerous cool day trips! So, we have visited the world-famous Railay Beach, went on a 4-island tour, bathed with elephants and explored the mangroves on a kayak tour.
Krabi is a beautiful destination, and in my opinion a great choice to escape the typical European Christmas hustle and bustle. Being able to enjoy one of the beautifully romantic destinations at Christmas under the tropical sun.
Goa, India
Recommended by Soumya Goswami from Nature Diary
Goa, the smallest state in India, has a coastline of 160 Km with more than 30 picturesque sea beaches. While October to February is a good time to visit Goa, you can get the best weather during Christmas. With an average temperature of 26 °C (78 °F), Goa is quite comfortable in the last week of December.
If you are a couple, looking for one of the perfectly romantic destinations at Christmas, Goa can be a terrific choice. I found the sea beaches at Palolem, Ashwem, Candolim, Benaulim, Patnem, and Colva most beautiful and quieter than others.
Goa is full of adventure! Like I did, enjoy water sports like parasailing, jet skiing, kayaking, wakeboarding, windsurfing, and kayaking with your partner. Not only these activities, but also enjoy the vibrant nightlife of Goa in the famous clubs, pubs, and restaurants.
The seaside candlelight dinner makes Goa even more, sited for one of the perfect romantic destinations at Christmas. While enjoying the cool breeze and listening to the waves, having some delicious food and drinks with your loved one can be a memory of a lifetime.
Besides activities around sea beaches, you may also like the famous churches of Goa during Christmas. Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral, Church of Our Lady of the Mount, Church of St. Cajetan, and Mae De Deus Church are the most beautiful and carry historical significance.
Goa is also known for a thrilling new year celebration. If you can extend your holidays from Christmas for a week, get ready to witness live music festivals, stunning lighting, and fireworks.

Wow, such an awesome list of destination. I would love to visit all of them.
Thank you the collaborators are fantastic, and yes I wish to visit them all only some on the list I have been…
Wow that’s an awesome list of Romantic Destinations for Christmas across the globe. I have not been to most of them but I’m sure traveling to these places during Christmas will bring a whole new level of pleasure and experience with each country having their own unique way of celebrating Christmas ⛄🎄.
Thank you so much I am glad you liked them and whilst I have been to many, as you say at Christmas the different traditions can take the destination to a whole new level…
Such a wonderful list of places.
(It should be noted, though, that prices for hotels, food and transport rise — sometimes quite steeply — at holiday times destinations like Cartagena, so be sure to budget for that!)
Thank you for your compliment and advice I think we notice it everywhere at this time also
Living in Australia now, I really feel nostalgic about Christmas in Europe. It is just a different vibe. I also enjoyed reading about the cities I do not immediately connect with Christmas 🙂 It is a fun read!
Thank you and yes even the short period we were in Europe at Christmas time it’s a completely different feeling…in Australia we make sand angels not snow angels and picnic at the beach…
I have been to North Carolina during Christmas a few times. It is absolutely beautiful! Looks like I would enjoy a few of these other destinations!
I have to say I am a Christmas Lover, and I agree so many of these places look beautiful…
I managed to miss Christmas completely in 1989 – I was in Spain in December, and as you say, Xmas isn’t celebrated until January 6th. Then on January 1st, I crossed into Portugal where Xmas had already been and gone.
Celebrations in a different country are always fascinating.
Ha Ha It is understandable different traditions, which fascinates me…I couldn’t miss it now but would love a White Christmas at least once in my life, once would probably be enough though…
Wow, this list is wonderful! I have already been to Berlin and Prague at Christmas time, but there is still so much to explore and visit! New York, Hallstatt, Amstrdam… I want that all!
Thank you from all of us… and I know it just grew my Christmas Market list out big time
Wow, what a list!! I’ve been to a few and none at Christmas. I visited Sevilla in summer, for instance. It was soooo warm, I can’t say it was sexy and romantic! 😂 But I bet it changes a lot with 30 degrees less!
Thank you… ha ha and yes so much can change with a small shift in Temperature, but we have been to several and found them enchanting…
