Saffire Freycinet, Tasmania

Recommended by Jeanine from  Lets go a Wandering

If you are looking for the epitome of luxury travel destinations, then Saffire Freycinet should be on your travel destinations bucket list.  It’s a must when you come to explore Tasmania, and one place that is definitely on my “DO” list. This luxurious holiday destination has everything you could possibly need or want without venturing off the property. Though if you do wish to explore more, they have selected experiences included in your package.

Best way to get there: Being on the East Coast, driving from one of the major airports offers a picturesque drive. However, Saffire also offers a luxury chauffeured served from both Launceston and Hobart airports. Alternatively, you can take a 30min scenic flight along the stunning East Coast of Tasmania from Hobart Airport. Saffire even has it’s own lounge at Hobart airport opened between 09:00-17:00, to relax before arriving or departing.

Top things to do: Our choice of top things to do includes a Waubs Harbour distillery tour at Bicheno, one we missed visiting last time we were in the area. A leisurely kayak is another top thing on our DO list. Though if these are not to your taste, you are spoilt for choice on things to do and a great selection of other experiences are available that are included in your package.

Unique things to do: As a food scientist and a lover of oysters donning a pair of wadders and sipping fine wine eating freshly shucked oysters is the ultimate unique experience. Getting into the kitchen to have a cooking demonstration or a mixology masterclass in the lounge is also right up there for us as things to do.

Luxury Accommodation Options: A range of suites are available at Saffire to choose from these includes their luxury suites, signature suites overlooking Oyster Bay or stay in one of the Private Pavilions with its own plunge pool.  Included in your stay is a full food and selected beverage service at the lounge and in your suite.

This is truly one of the greatest luxury travel destinations that anyone would wish to have on their bucket list.

Margaret River, West Australia

Recommended by Nadia from Perth Weekend

Western Australia recently made Lonely Planet’s list of the 30 Best places in the world to visit in 2023. In my opinion, a journey through the Margaret River region is the best way to sample everything WA has to offer and one of the best luxury travel destinations- it’s at the top of my list for a luxurious trip in 2023!

Margaret River truly does showcase the best of Western Australia –  spectacular beaches to laze on, forests of towering trees to hike through, mysterious caves to explore and delicious wines and local produce to indulge in.

The best way to get to the Margaret River region is by car – it’s an easy 3 hour drive south of WA’s capital city, Perth. The drive takes you through some beautiful landscapes and there are plenty of places to stop along the way to grab a coffee or to fuel up.

There is so much to do in and around Margaret River! A trip to the area would not be complete without exploring some of the region’s world-class wines. With over 90 cellar doors in the area, spending a day wine tasting is an absolute must. You can join a group wine tour or take a private tour for ultimate luxury. For lunch I recommend Leeuwin Estate, where you can enjoy a tasting menu expertly paired with their world-renowned wines.

As well as wine, Margaret River also offers some unique outdoor activities. You can hike through the tranquil Karri tree forests where some trees are over 60m tall! You can relax on the stunning beaches that are home to clear turquoise water and bright white sand. You can also explore the enigmatic caves in the region and marvel at the impressive limestone structures within. Just some of the reasons it is one of the ultimate travel destinations.

If you’re looking for the ultimate luxurious accommodation you can’t go past Injidup Spa Retreat, located just half an hour north of Margaret River. The private villas have uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean and onsite wellness spa will relax and rejuvenate any weary traveller,  !

Airlie Beach, Queensland

Recommended by Jan of Jan Adventures

Airlie Beach is one of the great luxury travel destinations of Eastern Australia to have on your bucket list! I spent five days in this oceanside town in January 2020. The reason it was on my bucket list was because I was looking to get close to the Barrier Reef but wanted to experience the inland area as well.

I chose to stay at the very nice Airlie Guest House, just a 10 minutes’ walk from the beach and harbor. I arrived at Airlie Beach via the small airport called Proserpine, just 26km away.

Because I love hiking, I wanted to spend some of my time checking out the forest area around Airlie Beach that offered great views of the surrounding islands. I did the 3-hour Honeyeater Lookout hike (short walk above our guesthouse) and a 2-hour bushwalk on the Mount Rooper Circuit (reached by the local bus). I saw many beautiful black and white butterflies and appreciated the sounds of exotic birds.

While the hiking adventures were free, I paid a hefty price of 250 Australian dollars per person for another adventure… that of a 60-minute plane ride over the Great Barrier Reef! I used GSL Aviation and would highly recommend them. It was an amazing ride and well worth the cost!

Where to eat in Airlie Beach? I tried several restaurants but would have to recommend the Sorrento Restaurant and Bar which is located by the Coral Sea Marina and provides a sensational sunset view. I sat on their outside deck and enjoyed the live music while sampling the local specialties.

Does Airlie Beach sound like one of your bucket list luxury travel destinations?

Whitsunday Islands, Queensland

Recommended by Victoria from My Australia Trip

The Whitsunday Islands, located off the coast of Queensland, Australia, is one of the top luxury travel destinations for your bucket list. Why you ask? It has an abundance of stunning natural beauty, world-renowned beaches, and a wide range of activities to enjoy. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or an adventure-filled vacation, the Whitsundays has something to offer everyone.

The best way to get to the Whitsundays is to drive to Airlie Beach and then take a boat from there. There are a variety of tours to choose from for different budgets.

You’ll have a packed itinerary during your time in the Whitsundays which will include swimming, snorkelling or diving to explore the Great Barrier Reef, and taking a boat tour to see the islands from a different perspective. Other unique activities include taking a scenic flight to see the islands from above, visiting the Hill Inlet Lookout to see the famous swirling sands of Whitehaven Beach, and exploring the Whitsunday Island National Park.

The Whitsundays don’t have too many accommodation options but you’ll find some luxury resorts on the islands. Some popular options include the Reef View Hotel and the Inter Continental Hayman Island Resort.

Since the Whitsundays largely consist of untouched national park there aren’t any restaurants available outside of the resorts. You’ll most likely be eating at your hotel so make sure to bring some snacks if you need them.

Vanuatu

Recommended by Jake from One Off Escapes

Now that the Pacific Islands have opened back up to international visitors, I simply cannot wait to head back to Rockwater Resort on Tanna Island. It’s one of the truly unique luxury travel destinations.

Tanna Island is accessible via a direct flight from the capital of Vanuatu, Port Vila.  It’s a deeply spiritual destination, being home to active volcano Mt Yasur, with which the locals are deeply connected.

On our previous visit we were unable to traverse the full circumference of the volcano’s rim due to the level of activity, meaning we missed the chance to gaze down into its depths, so this remains high on the bucket list.

Rockwater Resort is like no other. Built by hand, entirely from stones sourced from the surrounding area, it offers a Mediterranean feel, with colourful bougainvillea’s climbing the stone walls, perched atop a cliff overlooking the ocean below.  The rooms are encased by solid stone walls that bend and curve, a feast for the senses.  The flooring is a combination of smooth rock and fine sand, bringing a whole new meaning to the term ‘barefoot luxury’.

On my next trip, I’d also like to visit the nearby blue cave – access to which is not for the faint hearted.  The cave entrance is actually submerged in the ocean; though once inside you can explore on foot whilst being treated to a light show of luminescent blue water, illuminated by the sun’s rays peering through the opening.

Fiji

Recommended by Catrina from 24 Hours Layover

Top of my luxury  travel destinations bucket list I would like to visit in 2023 is one of Fiji’s luxury cruise ships! Fiji consists of 330 islands, so it can be time consuming and involves a bit of organisation if you want to travel between the islands. However, on the small 7 day luxury cruise ships organised by both Blue Lagoon Cruises and Captain Cook Cruises around Fiji’s Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands, they take care of all of that for you, sailing between islands and enabling you to see as much of Fiji as possible whilst still having a relaxing trip!

From visiting a different secluded beach and snorkeling site every day, to experiencing the culture in local villages, relaxing in the pool onboard or enjoying the sun deck with a cocktail – there’s something to suit everyone. My favourite activities definitely include swimming with manta rays and reef sharks – such unique and once-in-a-lifetime experiences! Other top activities include visiting the beach where the Tom Hanks ‘Castaway’ movie was filmed, and swimming in the iconic Sawa-i-Lau Caves – where scenes from the ‘Blue Lagoon’ movie were shot.

The cabins onboard the ships are luxurious, and they have delicious food onboard – as much as you want so you’ll be spoilt for choice and won’t even need to look elsewhere!

Fiji’s small cruise ships depart from Denarau Marina – a 40 minute taxi from Nadi International Airport. Direct flights go from Nadi to Australia, New Zealand and West Coast USA.

Aitutaki, Cook Islands

Recommended by Samantha Undiscovered Path Home

Nestled in the South Pacific, the often-forgotten Cook Islands boasts breath-taking beaches, secluded luxury resorts and pristine waters — making it one of the perfect luxury travel destinations. I first visited this country after finding a cheap direct flight and immediately fell in love with their sweeping, lush tropical landscape, a stark contrast to the blue hues of their surrounding waters. I’ve been dying to go back ever since.

When you visit the Cook Islands, you’ll fly into Rarotonga, the capital city. From there, you can opt to stay on Rarotonga or take a local flight out to one of the world’s best hidden gems: Aitutaki Islands. No matter where you opt to stay, you’ll want to stay at one of the most spectacular Cook Islands luxury resorts.

Book the Little Polynesian Resort, Pacific Resort or Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort, some of the most relaxing and most beautiful options in the Cook Islands. When you’re there, be sure to soak up the sun, try the island’s fresh seafood, go snorkeling, and of course enjoy the crystal clear blue waters of the Cook Islands. What more could you want from one of the best luxury travel destinations!!

Tahiti

Recommended by Kristin from Global Travel Escapades

Why: Vacationing in Tahiti is at the top of my luxury travel destinations bucket list because the last time I was here, I wasn’t able to experience everything the beautiful French Polynesian island has to offer.

Best Way to Get there: To get to Tahiti, you’ll want to fly into the Papeete International Airport.

Top things to do: I plan on spending a lot of time relaxing on the many black sand beaches and eating as much mango as possible. Seriously, once you taste the mangoes in Tahiti, you’ll instantly become a mango snob because they are so fresh, juicy, and sweet.

Other unique things to do: As someone who loves surfing and is always chasing the thrill of riding a clean wave, I hope to do lots of surfing around the island. I also plan on hiking to the beautiful Fautaua Waterfall again.

What are the luxury accommodations: For a luxury experience, you’ll definitely want to stay at one of the beach resorts, such as Te Moana Tahiti Resort.

Asia

A great selection of luxury travel destinations, can be found in Asia. As the continent covers such a great expanse and several countries, you are not short of options when it comes to luxury travel destinations. It’s an ideal mix of luxury experiences to add to your bucket list (DO List). Together with our fellow travel writers we showcase a small sample of what’s on offer.

Turkey

Cappadocia

Recommended by Stefanie from The Hidden Coconut

Cappadocia is a region in Turkey that is on my travel list for 2023 because of its unique landscape, historical art, and romantic activities. I had the chance to visit in Dec 2020, though would love to go again to experience the region in a different season. It’s truly one of the best luxury travel destinations to add to your list.

 Transportation

The best way to get to Cappadocia is by plane. It only takes about 1 hour from Istanbul. The arrival airport to Cappadocia will be either Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV).

 Things to Do

Hands down, the best thing you have to do in Cappadocia is go on a sunrise hot air balloon ride. There are over a hundred balloons that take off every day and it really is a sight to see. Once in the sky you’ll get to see the magnificent landscape of the region as the sun rises. The ride lasts for an hour and afterwards, there will be a champagne toast and you’ll receive a flight certificate.

Since the region is known for it’s landscape, being outdoors is the best way to explore the culture. During the day you can visit many of the historic monasteries and underground cities. The name Cappadocia means land of beautiful horses in Turkish, so another great activity is a sunset horseback riding tour. Be sure to visit the town of Avanos which is famous for clay pottery that dates back to 2000 BC.

 Accommodation

During your stay in Cappadocia, I recommend staying at a cave hotel. There are countless to choose from, but I like Anatolian Houses Cave Hotel. They are a 4-star hotel in Göreme built inside 8 fairy chimneys which really gives you a unique cave experience.

 Food

The dish that is most known in the region is called Testi Kebab or pottery kebab. This is a meat dish that traditionally consists of lamb and vegetables. It is cooked in a clay pot for 4 hours and brought out and cracked open for you at the restaurant. It’s all very elaborate but definitely a must try. I highly recommend Pumpkin Göreme Restaurant and Art Gallery for dinner.

Malaysia

Langkawi

Recommended by Brodi Cole from Our Offbeat Life

Known as the Jewel of Kedah, Langkawi is a stunningly beautiful island that’s home to some of the most luxurious resorts and hotels in the world. It’s one of the must-visit luxury travel destinations this year!

From its white sand beaches to its crystal clear waters, Langkawi offers a truly unique experience that no other destination can match.

One of the best features of staying in Langkawi is that many of their hotels offer private pools. This means you can enjoy your very own slice of paradise without having to worry about sharing it with other guests or onlookers.

With incredible views and spacious villas, these luxury hotels provide an unparalleled level of comfort and privacy. Plus, they come equipped with all the modern amenities you would expect from a five-star hotel such as Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, mini-bars, and more. Even their on-site restaurants are top-rated!

In addition to its luxurious accommodations, Langkawi also has plenty to offer in terms of activities for visitors. Whether you are looking for outdoor adventure or something more relaxing like golfing or spa treatments, there’s something for everyone here. The Langkawi Sky Bridge has breathtaking views!

You can also explore the island’s numerous shops and restaurants for an unforgettable shopping experience or sample some local delicacies at one of Langkawi’s many eateries.

For those who just want to relax and unwind after a long day exploring this breathtaking destination, Langkawi is just what you need! With its beautiful beaches and lush green hillsides, this place offers plenty of opportunities for peace and quiet time away from all the hustle and bustle of daily life back home. Everything you need and want in one of the best luxury travel destinations.

Perhentian Islands

Recommended by Farihah from Muslim Solo Travel

Perhentian, Redang, or Kapas Island? The dilemma that island-goers (including me) have when visiting Terengganu, Malaysia. There are so many luxury travel destinations to choose from.

As someone who has visited Redang previously, Perhentian is on my next #2023luxury bucket list in Terengganu, Malaysia. Perhentian has maintained its degree of local feel that makes itself a paradise with less tourists. Now that, is for luxurious to me and one of the best things luxury travel destinations can offer.

Meaning “Stopover” in Malay language, Perhentian Islands are split into two: Kecil (Small) and Besar (Big). While Kecil is associated as “backpacker island” and Besar for “the mature & discern tourists”, 4-star resorts like Alunan in Kecil proves otherwise.

To get to Perhentian Island, one needs to take about an hour boat journey from Kuala Besut Jetty. The Jetty is reachable via car or bus from nearby Malaysian major cities like Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu. Some resorts like Alunan would happily arrange transfers. And of course — go during low season, March or October so you can fully experience the remoteness of Perhentian.

Besides the usual snorkelling, scuba diving, and turtle discovery activities, jungle trekking in search of Dusky Leaf Monkeys and hiking through Windmill Scenic Spot to the remote Adam & Eve Beach are also a treat!

But for me personally, just thinking about disengaging from the busyness of city life and getting lost in time from kayaking around the island’s clear-blue waters to discover hidden coves— ah, a dream!

If you’re someone who wants ultimate privacy, whilst getting access to pristine beachfront, and premium services, Bubu Villa is your answer. The villas come with their own entrances and garden, making it a luxurious abode in Perhentian.

When in Perhentian, Malay food at the local eateries is a must! BBQ fresh seafood, the humble Malay-style fried rice and Roti Canai are just a few menu items that you can find on the Island.

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

Recommended by Grace Angharad from Pixie Dust and Passports

With its towering façade, incredible rooftop infinity pool, and breathtaking views over Singapore. It’s no surprise that Marina Bay Sands is consistently booked out as it truly is one of the top luxury travel destinations in its own right.

If you’re wondering what it is, it’s essentially a stunning hotel in the tiny Lion City. It’s considered the most luxurious hotel in Singapore and boasts an impressive 55 stories of extravagance.

From the perfectly manicured rooftop to the luxury suites and personalized butler services, it’s easy to see why it’s favoured by the rich and famous! Seriously, as someone who lived in the country for 18 years, it was somewhere that I simply couldn’t wait to visit!

To get here, I suggest hopping on the Downtown Line or the Circle Line which both head to Bayfront Station. This is as close as you’ll get to Marina Bay Sands and it’s ridiculously easy to navigate the city’s public transport system – so don’t stress!

If you look at this incredible building, you’ll see why it’s responsible for transforming Singapore’s already gorgeous skyline. Not only does it literally have a boat-like structure sitting on top of it, but the 3 distinct towers and the iconic shops at Marina Bay Sands add an air of luxury to the place. Oh, and did I mention the casino, designer boutiques, and sprawling theatre that lie just underneath the hotel? All the best luxury travel destinations need or want is here.

If you’re looking for more, it’s worth heading to the surrounding city hotspots. Whether you want to catch a show at the Esplanade, visit the beautiful flower domes at Gardens by the Bay, or grab a cocktail at Raffles, there’s so much to love about this upscale area.

And if you don’t want to stay in Marina Bay Sands itself, I’ll always recommend checking into the Swissotel (which offers 360-degree panoramas!) or the Fullerton Bay Hotel which is home to an amazing afternoon tea.

Bali

Recommended by Catherine from Nomadicated

From magnificent jungle waterfalls to glistening sandy beaches, Bali is filled with adventurous activities and boasts a superior tourist infrastructure, one of the ultimate luxury travel destinations for everyone. With plenty of flights around the world into Bali’s capital, Denpasar, be ready for a fantastic welcome as soon as you step off the plane.

With so many captivating things to do on a Bali bucket list, it’s hard to know where to start. To begin, I recommend exploring the beautiful Balinese religion by visiting iconic landmarks like Uluwatu Temple and Tanah Lot. Afterwards, surf in Canggu or party the night away at one of Seminyak’s upscale beach clubs. Also, take time to relax amongst Ubud’s stunning rice paddies and say hello to the monkeys of Monkey Forest.

Finally, I recommend renting your own motorbike to explore Bali’s enchanting scenery and discover hidden gems at your own pace. Diving the WWII wreck in Tulamben, finding the best view of Mount Agung, or taking the ferry to the famed Nusa Penida are some experiences worth adventuring.

Dubbed the “Instagram Hotel”, experience luxury accommodation Munduk Moding Plantation Resort & Spa, like no other. Featuring multiple infinity pools and unique amenities such as flower baths and floating breakfasts, take in magnificent canopy views of Bali’s highlands from this paradise. The epitome of luxury travel destinations in itself.

And what about foods to try? Bali is filled with gastronomic cuisines, but if you’re looking for a true taste of Bali, try Babi Guling (suckling pig) from Pak Malek or Bebek Betutu from Chandi – two regional delicacies!

Raja Ampat

Recommended by Kanupriyaa from My Lost Camel

Raja Ampat – The Last Paradise has been on the top of my bucket list for a while now and I will finally be visiting this beautiful archipelago in 2023. Raja Ampat is one of the most pristine and untouched island clusters in the world. Making it a must on the luxury travel destinations DO list.

You can only get to these islands by sailing aboard a liveaboard boat. The waters of Raja Ampat are thriving with ocean life including whale sharks, oceanic manta rays, the mola mola and a thousand different varieties of fish.

When I go to Raja Ampat, I plan on staying aboard a luxury liveaboard yacht that will sail through the islands for a week. The liveaboard stops at the best destinations for snorkeling and diving in the archipelago during the day. You spend the nights amidst the waters drinking wine and eating the best food ever. I hope to travel atop the Calico Jack, the most beautiful phinisi schooner boat with room for 10 people on board. The Damai II is also on my list for its luxury accommodations.

The food aboard is prepared by the best chefs who are knowledgeable in local and international cuisine. Anything you want can be prepared for you! I will be spending my days diving with the biggest shark species, wakeboarding in the clear waters, and hiking on uninhabited islands with the most pristine nature that can be found nowhere else in the whole world!

Our Pre-travel Checklists will help you as you plan your next luxury vacation destination. Everything you need to do whether it’s a local trip or you’re travelling overseas, we have a check point for it. Seamlessly plan your next adventure.
